During the recent economic and social crises, we have been focused on programs to support the art community. We are dedicating $1 Million to commission artwork from Bay Area artists for an exhibition and auction.
Artists have been nominated for this commission because of the dedication to their practice and committed engagement in the Bay Area arts community. Our mission is to support their artistic voice because it is invaluable for future renewal.
The commission offered is $10,000 to each artist. To support the greater arts ecosystem, the produced artwork will be exhibited and auctioned, with all proceeds donated to select Bay Area Arts Organizations.
Nominees are asked to fill out the linked application, which includes a brief 100-word proposal for the commissioned artwork as a response to the provided prompt. Artists are encouraged, though not required, to address the concept of ‘The Ark’. There are many ancient narratives that tell of a vessel that survives a disrupting event, holding in it the microcosm of a rebirth. It is a powerful allegory to contemplate during the COVID-19 crisis and the imperative civil unrest that has resulted from pervasive white supremacy in our country, especially in regard to institutional police brutality against BIPOC and continued systemic violence against LGBTQIA+ communities.
